SRO: The OS Battle Moves To Embedded Systems

“It’s not just in the area of server operating systems that
Microsoft Corp. is pitted against Linux. As of Monday, the OS war
officially moved downstream to embedded devices.”

“On Monday, Microsoft announced it has begun shippingWindows NT
Embedded 4.0, formerly code-named Impala. Microsoft said the
product has been in beta test at 600 sites since last fall.”

“At its core, Embedded NT consists of NT 4.0 plus the various
Service Pack 5 fixes and features. But it also includes some custom
features tailor-made for the embedded market, such as headless and
Flash-boot support.”
