SuSE Linux 6.1 available May 3rd

Issued from Marc Torres, President of SuSE.

Dear SuSE Community,

SuSE Linux 6.1 will be released in English on May 3rd — and it
includes version 2.2.5 of the Linux kernel!

Kernel 2.2 offers significant enhancements, including:

  • Even faster kernel performance
  • Much improved performance and support for Symmetric Multi-
    Processing (SMP) devices
  • New filesystems and partition types for interconnectivity, plus
a new caching system for supported filesystems that markedly
    improves performance
  • Networking improvements: New networking core, new tunneling
code, a completely new firewalling and filtering system called
‘ipchains’, support for limiting bandwidth consumption, enhanced
    file and printer sharing protocols
  • Driver support for many more devices, particularly multimedia
(video, digitizers, and sound, even an fbcon driver)
  • Game support, including several common joysticks and even
    Gamepad for PlayStation and Nintendo

There’s an excellent overview of the various updates in the 2.2.

SuSE Linux continues to incorporate the best new applications,
updates, and device drivers in its releases. Some of the highlights
of the 6.1 release include:

  • Improved desktop environments, including the updated KDE 1.1
    and now GNOME 1.0
  • Two complete office applications — SuSE Linux 6.1 includes
StarOffice 5 Personal Edition, and the Personal Edition of Corel
WordPerfect 8. Both allow you to import MS Office(R) files and
    other popular formats.
  • XFree86 TM 3.3.3.1 support for all 3Dfx cards: Voodoo I + II
(accelerated), Voodoo Rush (accelerated), Voodoo Banshee/Voodoo III
    (beta)
  • Ghostscript 5.10
  • ijb (non-cacheing HTTP proxy server that filters content as
    described in the configuration files)
  • freeamp (MP3 Player)
  • netbeans (Cross-platform Java IDE, Demo)

For an itemized list of everything that’s new on 6.1, see

It’s still only $49.95, and you always get 60 days of
installation support.
