“As I pore through reams and reams of good news concerning open
source companies, one thought occurred to me: I didn’t really care.
This was odd. Back in the late 90’s, when large software vendors
announced support of Linux, I practically did somersaults in my
desk chair. When it became clear that open source would survive the
‘dot bomb,’ no one was more exuberant than me–in part due to the
promise of being able to provide for my family. And here I am, in
the latter half of the inaugural decade of the 21st century,
witnessing a cascade of good news filter down for many companies
that produce Open Source software, yet I’m not excited.“For me, this loss of excitement has much to do with my
