“While Microsoft’s (MSFT) low-margin Windows line is losing
ground to GNU/Linux-based operating systems, its browser may too
face a challenge from an open-source rival: Mozilla. A band of
Mozilla programmers released the “M12 build” on Thursday, a
pre-alpha version of their browser, which boasts a fast,
standards-compliant page rendering feature and an instant-messaging
client based on the ubiquitous Internet Relay Chat protocol.
AOL’s (AOL) Netscape, which helped fund work on Mozilla, is also
folding the guts of the Mozilla browser (sans the non-AOL instant
messenger) into its own Communicator product, the forthcoming
version 5.0.”
