WideOpenNews: Compaq’s Dance-and-Chew-Gum Linux Man

“Compaq Computer Corp. is getting more serious about its Linux
commitment. The latest signal: it recently named an executive to
coordinate Linux programs across Compaq’s product lines.
Coordination is the key word: ‘We were doing a lot of things in
Linux, just not in a very coordinated way,’ said the veteran exec,
Glenn Johnson, who now holds the title of director for Compaq’s
Linux program.”

“…Linux is taking off faster than Compaq or almost anyone
else would have predicted, and the company now is signaling a rapid
move beyond Linux tokenism.
‘The Linux market is expanding,’
Johnson said. ‘Things that sell a lot of computers are good for
Compaq.’

Linux is seen not just as a Windows replacement, but as a Unix
competitor as well. ‘We made an early decision to support Linux as
part of our Unix strategy,’ said Johnson, noting that Linux for
smaller systems and Unix for larger systems harmonize well in the
same enterprise.”
