“Research firm Survey.com predicts that Microsoft will continue
its dominance of the enterprise computing market through 2001.
Results from the first survey in its Open Source Unix Research
Initiative indicate that even though Linux should see a 100-700
percent market share gain on eight enterprise server applications,
Microsoft NT/2000 will maintain 30-65 percent of these same
markets.”
“Open source Unix (OSU), which includes Linux and FreeBSD, will
have the greatest impact among smaller companies, while Microsoft
will continue to gain market share among the largest companies.
About 75 percent of companies with 250 or fewer employees plan to
employ some sort of OSU by third quarter 2000, compared to only
half of the companies with 10,000 or more workers.”
“The survey in no way negates International Data Corporation’s
recently released study, which reported that Linux gained 25
percent in server sales last year, while NT remained static at 38
percent. The Survey.com study acknowledges Linux’s recent gains,
noting that it is more likely to replace a proprietary version of
Unix rather than Windows.”
