“Two shows are being held this week at New York’s black-glassed
Jacob J. Javits Center. The big show on the main floor is called
“eBusiness, the New Business Platform.” It’s populated by guys
wearing sharp suits and slickened hair, talking into cell phones
with self-important looks on their faces while nyloned marketing
babes lure show-goers to product displays inspired by Las
Vegas.”
“Occupying Javits’ spare nooks and crannies, meantime, is the
open source software conference called “The Bazaar: The Technology
of Cooperation.” Nothing slick about it: top-notch programmers in
comfy garb who get their hair cut at shops with striped poles
rotating outside the door if they don’t cut it themselves at
home….”
“Bazaar attendees in general seem to have no problem with
making money. Many are happy to rake in a little more green
themselves, and are launching companies to do so. What they are
worried about is a profit motive run amok, wounding the spirit of
open source cooperation.“
