AlwaysOn: We recently interviewed Steve
Ballmer, and he often returns to the concept of who is ultimately
responsible for open-source code. I’m sure you hear this a lot. How
do you feel about that in terms of security and other growing
issues or concerns? How does the open-source world build a comfort
level with the user community?

Friedman: One aspect of that is Ballmer paints
the picture that Microsoft is fully responsible for its code,
whereas with open source you have this sort of chaotic mass of
people with no ownership.

“But I don’t see Microsoft owning its security problems and
actually getting them fixed. And I don’t see it reimbursing
businesses for the problems that are caused by its software. So I
don’t really think Ballmer’s picture is accurate. There is not yet
a real world-class, global, 24/7 enterprise Linux software company.
And that’s where we want to go with Novell: taking responsibility,
speaking directly to customers, and solving problems…”
