in ’93, the market wanted us to throw away Unix and adopt Windows.
Now they want us to throw away Unix and adopt Linux. But the
biggest appeal of Linux hasn’t been open source, despite what you
may read in the press. No CIO I know wants more source code.
They’ve got enough, thank you very much. What they want is the
economics of the Intel software. As one CIO put it to me, the
greatest appeal of Linux is a hardware price plan. Which is why we
now deliver Solaris on that hardware price plan. And that’s where
we are doubling down, really making a bet on a fundamental
dislocation that’s occurring in the marketplace…”
