internet operations on proprietary technology from well-known
suppliers.“Now it runs an even bigger business on open source
technology–the so-called free software that represents one of the
biggest trends in computing.“The company takes millions of orders using the free Linux
operating system, the free Apache web server and a free scripting
language, as well as two technologies that aren’t so free:
Hewlett-Packard servers and the Oracle database.“That compares to 1998, when the company used more expensive
Alpha servers from Digital, including Digital’s proprietary
operating system, as well as web software from Netscape and a
scripting language developed by Amazon itself…”
