“This week marks the 2nd anniversary of the first time I met in
real life a person under the employ of Microsoft. Fresh into a new
job and fresh with ideas on how Linux was going to take over the
world, I relished the opportunity to tear into this poor gentleman
who was simply trying to give us some copies of Microsoft
Encarta–their encyclopedia–for free.

“I was strongly against the idea. Accepting free copies of
Encarta would mean that we would be forced to run Microsoft
Windows. Even if they were to offer free Windows, it would still
mean that we would be locked in to a Microsoft system forever and
our children would grow up not knowing freedom.
