Boston Globe: Lindows Case Goes Beyond Business

“Any day now, a federal judge in Seattle appears likely to make
a key ruling on the validity of the Windows trademark in the
‘Lindows’ case, a high-stakes battle between the ‘open source’
movement in the computer software industry and its most powerful
adversary, Microsoft Corp.

“This is another skirmish between Microsoft’s dominant Windows
operating system, tightly controlled under copyright protection,
and the Linux operating system, a rising industry rival and a
favorite in the community of programmers who believe in open access
to software technology so that all can collaborate to improve
it.

“In another way, this battle is personal. A San Diego digital
enterpreneuer and open source activist named Michael Robertson is
squaring off, unabashedly, against Bill Gates, the chief software
architect, chairman, and founder of industry giant
