Boston Globe: Lycos to turn ranking system over to users

“Today, Waltham-based Lycos. Inc. plans to become the first
major search service to turn the ranking system over to its users.
Lycos will announce that it is joining the ”Open Directory
Project,” which invites users to help create lists of the most
useful sites within certain subject areas.”

“Just as backers of Linux say they have used the process of peer
review to create a superior operating system, participants in the
Open Directory Project say they are building a superior,
participatory method for organizing content on the Web.”
