“Linux, the free operating system (OS), has become a hit with
small businesses and the army of computer resellers and consultants
that they rely on for IT services according to the cover story,
“Generation LinuX,” in the current (April 12) issue of CMP Media’s
(Nasdaq: CMPX) VARBusiness magazine.”

“The Linux mascot, a smiling Penguin, has become one of the most
recognizable icons in the computer industry. The free Unix-based OS
that Linus Torvalds, “the Wizard of OS,” created as a college
student in 1991 is being hailed by some Linux die-hards as an
“Windows NT killer.””

“Major vendors, such as Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard
Co., and IBM Corp. are taking notice and placing their support
behind Linux. VARBusiness conducted dozens of interviews with
computer resellers, distributors and vendors to determine whether
Linux had hit the mainstream. The conclusion: Linux is a real
market force, battering both NT and traditional Unix. Additionally,
the magazine finds, if big-name vendors keep their commitments of
major financial and product support, the movement will only become
stronger.”
