“A new syndicated survey of IT decision makers in North
America just completed by Survey.com, the leading eResearch
services company, reveals that just under two-thirds of respondents
(64.2%) identify Red Hat Linux as the primary open-source UNIX
distribution used by their organization. This is more than
eight times the North American market share garnered by the number
two and three open-source Unix distributions, Mandrake Linux and
FreeBSD. Furthermore, over 80% of respondents at organizations that
have not yet adopted open-source UNIX are considering using Red Hat
Linux, almost three times the mind share of the runner up, Caldera
Linux. “
“These figures are a testament to Red Hat’s aggressive
marketing,” said Dave Trowbridge, senior analyst at Survey.com, “as
well as its dedication to partnering with the widest possible range
of business partners. Even though the survey shows that systems
vendors such as Dell and IBM will become more important as the
market moves out of the early adopter space, Red Hat’s relationship
with these players and others will make it difficult for
competitors to catch up.”
“Detailed results from the new survey, which also cover support
and purchase preferences for open-source UNIX, are available to the
press on request; a chart of the market share results can be found
