“If necessity is the mother of invention, then a budget-crunch
is the big daddy of resourcefulness. Once solely at the mercy of
high-cost software vendors, companies are now looking hard at the
much cheaper, free-flowing open-source applications. An outright
rebellion may be afoot.

“‘I am hearing rumblings from clients that more critical
applications are being migrated to Linux. And, I heard that in
Europe too–which is surprising, since Europeans are usually so
conservative about operating systems,’ John Ragsdale, vice
