“A modestly performing 32-bit RISC processor with a pedigree
dating back to the early 1990s is quietly gaining momentum in the
marketplace, having hitched its star to the Linux platform.”

“Open-source Linux has edged out proprietary flavors of Unix and
Windows NT in a number of applications, particularly in LANs and
Internet servers. The 100LX is Axis’ sixth-generation Etrax.”

“Linux support gives Etrax access to a wealth of development
tools and development experts. And because many of the established
RISC architectures are focused on delivery in the form of
intellectual property to large OEMs’ system-on-chip developers,
Mauritsson said, they may not be available to small companies that
just want to buy a handful of chips.”
