“At one time, NetWare was the network operating system for the
PC world. In particular, there are still companies that depend upon
its bread and butter networking on lovingly maintained NetWare 3.1x
and 4.x set-ups. And why shouldn’t they? It’s been long
acknowledged that for fundamental print and file services along
with rock-solid stability, you couldn’t beat NetWare.

“That was then. This is now. Until recently, NetWare had been in
a decline thanks mostly to aggressive competition from Microsoft
with its Windows NT, Windows 2000, and now Server 2003 operating
systems. Novell executives, no fools, saw that and decided to make
a radical change: the company would become a Linux company.

“It did this by buying German Linux power SUSE. But, at the same
time, there were still hundreds of thousands of NetWare legacy
customers left. What to do…?”
