“An acquaintance wrote me the other day regarding an article he
was writing for a well-known computer publication. The premise of
the article was that Linux acceptance so far has been limited to
the enterprise market, and he was looking for my take on why Linux
has not earned a broader acceptance in the computing populace,
implying that enterprise acceptance of Linux just wasn’t
enough….”

But let’s play “what if” for a moment, and accept his
premise that Linux has not made its mark past the enterprise
market. So what?
The enterprise market is a pretty doggone
lucrative market. Many companies spend millions of dollars trying
to crack the enterprise market. Virtually every computer vendor in
the Fortune 1000 makes its mark from selling to the enterprise
market. Tell IBM or Dell to ignore the enterprise market? If that
happened, Michael Dell would be back selling PCs in his dorm
room.”
