“Sun Microsystems Inc. has made another push into storage —
this time in storage-management software. The Palo Alto, Calif.,
company today announced it has acquired HighGround Systems Inc., of
Marlboro, Mass., a management software developer whose flagship
product is used by customers to plan and allocate storage more
efficiently.”
“For a long time, Sun has been beating its chest saying they
are for open systems. Well, if this isn’t proof, I don’t know what
is,” said Steve Duplessie, an analyst with the Enterprise Storage
Group, in Milford, Mass. “This is a true open-systems play. If they
want to become a hardware and software open-systems player, this is
one way to do it.”
“HighGround, which counts Compaq Computer Corp. as one of its
major investors, has developed an open-system software product
called Storage Resource Manager. The Web-based tool works on
Windows NT, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX and Linux.”
