Forbes: For Dell, Linux Is As Strategic As Windows

The bloom might be off the rose of Linux stocks lately, but
Dell Computer still wants to make a bouquet. Dell is upgrading Red
Hat Linux to the same status that Microsoft’s Windows and Novell’s
NetWare operating systems have within Dell.

“That means that Dell not only will preinstall Red Hat Linux on
all desktops and servers–it’s been doing that for about a
year–but will sell consulting and development services for Linux,
just as it does for Windows and NetWare. The companies have worked
for months to make Linux part of the manufacturing process at
Dell.”

“Linux, no longer fringe alternative software at Dell, will be
one of its three strategic operating systems. Consequently, Dell
will push Sun Microsystems’ UnixWare, two other operating systems
it sells, further into the background.”
