weight as the one announced on Aug. 14 of this year.

“That’s when Amazon.com… the Web’s premier retailer, revealed
that it saved millions of dollars by ditching its proprietary Unix
systems in favor of Linux. Amazon, with $3 billion in 2001 sales,
began the switch early last year as it decided to focus as much on
profitability as torrid growth.

“Linux’s role in helping companies to save money has become a
familiar refrain in several industries; Wall Street firms, in
particular, have been vocal proponents… But there is something
about Linux that makes it a no-brainer for e-commerce…”
