“Corel Corp. has posted a devastating first quarter and is
projecting similarly huge losses over the next two quarters, saying
it may have to resume cutting costs to right itself.”

“An analyst said Corel’s problem is that its older software
products — WordPerfect office suite and CorelDraw graphics package
— are starting to slip sharply nothing new has yet filled the
void.”

“The… company’s best hope for the future is now its Linux
products, which include a Linux version of its office software
package that will begin shipping today…”

“But there’s bad news even with Linux… The company
said yesterday Linux sales fell to $2.3-million during the first
quarter, down from $3.2-million during the previous quarter. “Even
that looks shaky,” said Duncan Stewart, a portfolio manager at Tera
Capital Corp. in Toronto. “There really is nothing positive in this
quarter.””
