“Oracle is not faultless when it comes to its dealing with the
open source community, but then again who is?

“That said, Oracle is not an open source company. They will
likely never be as open as a Red Hat, which bases its entire
business on open source. Oracle is a company that uses and
contributes to open source as part of their overall offerings. When
Oracle says ‘Open’ –they’re not always talking about source
either.

“While Linux is key platform for Oracle, so too is Solaris 11
which is open for development but not necessarily in terms of
source. Oracle’s namesake database will likely never be open source
and neither will most of Oracle’s CRM and ERP related software
either.”
