Some followup on the Burlington story that generated some
excitement a while back as the company readys a deployment of PoS
terminals as well. The article also mentions that Linux’s share in
this arena has grown to upwards of eight percent even as Musicland
may be deciding against its own previously-planned Linux
deployment.

“As part of a larger plan to spread the use of the
Linux operating system throughout its retail stores, Burlington
Coat Factory has begun a two-year effort to switch over to
Linux-based point-of-sale terminals.

Burlington joins Home Depot in turning to Linux to run in-store
PoS terminals-the registers cashiers use to process sales, check
pricing information and record transactions to a central data
repository via Web or wireless links.

The clothing retailer, which operates nearly 300 stores, will
run Linux on all the terminals in its new stores, and expects to
finish migrating older stores’ terminals to Linux in the next
couple of years. The company is replacing NCR registers that run on
Intel 286 and 386 chips.”
