Is It Time For Desktop Linux To Focus On Niche Applications And Stop Obsessing About Flashy GUIs?

My phone has now become a more important device than a laptop or desktop computer. It appears to me that the only tasks we really need to perform on computers are specific to a particular niche whether that is video editing, writing books, programming or making music. So why do we obsess about the desktop environment, the menus and how good the audio player is?
