IT-Analysis: IBM backs Linux Everywhere; May be Most Critical Development Yet for Linux

“…this year IBM seems determined to dislodge its rivals from
their by now incumbent positions. And with that in mind IBM has
gone absolutely Linux-tastic. Every server that comes out of the
big blue doors over at the big blue HQ are coming packed with Linux
— you name it, it’s got it – and the first one, that inimitable
beast, will be the new mainframe, running Linux.”

“This of course is the perennial issue for Linux though, will it
ever really hit the big time and convert us all? The chances are
that it most certainly will. Perhaps the one big thing that stood
in the way of serious high-end Linux success was the small matter
of getting into the competitive marketplace. True it has been
bobbling around the peripherals, with enormous success in the
Internet space at least, for some time and very few people doubt
its worth anymore. But this move by IBM has the potential to really
lift the system into the upper echelons of the enterprise space —
and that should be great news for all.”

“The enterprise space is where the really big bucks get
churned and this deal means that Linux is very much going to be
touted as a solution for the type of applications, databases and
enterprise systems that exist in this space. That’s a big deal. And
it could well prove the most critical development yet for the Linux
movement.”
