“A study from Zona research emerged earlier this week… What it
found though will do little to further the cause of the open source
movement. For starters the company discovered that right now, Linux
deployments are almost exclusively limited pilot programmes and
departmental resources. Further to that it revealed that almost 75%
of organisations that have deployed Linux are using the system to
support fewer than 100 users…”

“That however is the bad news, if you wish to take it that way,
and shows fairly clearly that, right now, Linux just hasn’t made it
into the upper echelons of the data centre. The good news though is
that 24% of organisation polled said that they had made a serious
strategic, organisational commitment to the open source movement
and that many of them were opting for Linux because of its
stability and reliability — alongside other reasons like lower
price, and overall scalability.”

“Perhaps the bit of news that will bring the most joy to the
supporters of Linux however, and the bit that will undoubtedly have
Microsoft’s minions shifting nervously in their seats, is that
Windows is the single operating system most often replaced with
Linux
— although two thirds of those polled said they were
looking to replace Unix systems with the Linux operating
system.”
