“Now that Oracle is rolling out its much lauded iFS
(Internet File System) it seems the company is using the
opportunity to once again hit Microsoft where it hurts.
Ignoring the criticism leveled at the firm for delivering the
product more than 8 months late, now the company is backing it up
with further enhancements and solutions that show just how
seriously the company is taking this Internet lark.”
“As if riding the back of the success it hopes to experience
from the iFS, Oracle yesterday revealed another initiative aimed
at, once again, further displacing Microsoft from its entrenched
desktop position. So far the solution is apparently unnamed but in
its most simple terms provides an off-site storage system for
personal and organisational files.”
“The solution is still lacking a few fundamental details, but
ultimately it would appear that, depending on the amount of storage
you want, the customer will pay for the right to store data at one
of Oracle’s data centres. This, Oracle argues, gives benefits to
the organisation by having well managed, replicated, data that is
readily accessible from anywhere in the world – effectively
removing the burden of an intricate management system.”
