“Even if you are not one of Computer Associates’ 10,000 Ingres
customers, the move last month by the company to sell Ingres to two
venture capitalists probably got your attention. Computer
Associates and Garnett & Helfrich Capital, a private equity
firm specializing in venture buyouts, set up a partnership
arrangement for the purpose of spinning off Ingres into an
independent corporate entity. The stated plan is for Ingres to
focus exclusively on the development dynamics and business
opportunities associated with the open source database
marketplace.

“Although Garnett & Helfrich Capital is the majority
shareholder in Ingres, Computer Associates has a substantial piece
of the pie and as such will appoint will appoint one person to
Ingres’s board of directors…”
