“The approach is a cross between an Online agreement
where you must accept a license before downloading an item, and
pop-up agreements that appear when installing a particular piece of
software…Sun Java for example.

“We call this trial approach “License Agreements Before
Acquisition”. It works by allowing end users to accept license
agreements for contained software prior to obtaining an
installation CD or DVD. The media also contains the appropriate
license information, and labeling is added to remind the owner, and
inform any unknowing 3rd party would-be recipients of the software,
of the license agreements under which the software may be used and
distributed. (see the example picture below)

“For the end user it means they could get a more complete
product, while at the same time being more aware of licensing
restrictions on the software they use on a daily basis.
Idealistically, this approach could help guide more people to
support open alternatives.”
