Linus Torvalds, Candy Chang, Chris DiBona Confirmed for LinuxCon/CloudOpen

The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced new keynote speakers for LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America taking place September 16-18, 2013 at the Hyatt New Orleans in New Orleans, La.

The latest keynote confirmations include:

TED Senior Fellow and Artist Candy Chang

Candy Chang is an artist and designer based in New Orleans. She is passionate about how public spaces can spark community discussion. Her talks are recognized for inspiring audiences to think differently about how to approach work, sharing what can be learned from collective wisdom, and what can be accomplished within communities.

LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America will feature a public space inspired by Chang’s “Before I Die” wall that invites attendees to share their ideas on what they hope for Linux and open cloud in the future.

Google’s Director of Open Source Chris DiBona

DiBona’s teams oversee license compliance and support for the open source developer community through programs such as the Google Summer of Code and through the release of open source software projects and patches. At LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America, DiBona will talk about What Five Years of Android Has Meant.

Linux creator Linus Torvalds

Torvalds created Linux in 1991 and today remains the ultimate authority on the Linux kernel. A Linux Foundation fellow, he will join other leading kernel developers including Jon Corbet, Greg Kroah-Hartman and Sarah Sharp to share insights into the state of the Linux kernel as well as ongoing and future work.

LinuxCon North America, which has sold out every year since its debut, is the world’s leading conference addressing all matters Linux for the global business and technical communities. CloudOpen North America, which debuted just last year, features technical content that addresses open cloud platforms, tools and big data strategies. It will cover technical content such as Chef, Gluster, Hadoop, KVM, Linux, OpenStack, oVirt, Puppet, the Xen Project and more.

Other confirmed keynote speakers include:

§  Jonathan Bryce, executive director of OpenStack Foundation, will talk about “Developers: The New Superpower.”

§  Martin Fink, CTO and director of HP Labs, will reflect on his long career in open source software and where the industry is headed today.

§  Kevin Kelly, digital visionary and founding executive editor, Wired Magazine, will present “The Technium,” in which he ponders: What comes after the Internet? What is bigger than the web? What will produce more wealth than all the startups to date?

§  Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director of Valve, will talk about the company’s perspective on Linux for gaming.

§  Dirk Hohndel, Intel’s chief Linux and open source technologist, will talk about mobile computing and the role of HTML5.

§  Eben Upton, founder of Raspberry Pi Foundation, will share the latest work on the popular technology.

§  Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation, will reveal new information about Linux, open cloud and collaboration.

LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America will be co-located with a variety of itger events to increase opportunities for learning and collaboration. This year’s co-located events include: Gluster Workshop, Linux Security Summit, Linux Plumbers Conference, Linux Wireless Summit, UEFI Plugfest and the Xen Project User Summit.
