Jason Perlow explains why you should pay for the Red Hat Network
instead of using Debian’s apt-get or similar tools from Mandrake or
Helix:

“Unlike what exists for Windows, there has not been one
central repository or mechanism for keeping a Linux system
up-to-date — with the notable exception of the Debian distribution
apt update system, which, while extremely flexible and powerful,
does not have widespread adoption. There have been attempts to
create utilities for other distributions that do the same thing for
RPM system components (including AutoRPM, Helix Update, and
Mandrake Update), but they don’t really have the backing of a large
organization to set up the support infrastructure; it’s still up to
the end user to properly configure and point the system towards a
reliable source of updates. Short of upgrading your Linux
distribution once or twice a year, there’s been no easy way to keep
a system truly up-to-date.”
