“Researchers at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center are
embarking on a Linux odyssey funded by networking deity Cisco
Systems.“
“According to the center, Cisco has so far donated $100,000 to
the project, dubbed Web100, which aims to facilitate network
transmission rates of 100 Mb per second. “The gift provides initial
funding for research into software that can `tune’ computer
operating systems (OSs) to fully exploit available network
bandwidth,” said Richard Fulton of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing
Center.”
“Researchers will initially work with the Linux OS, but plan to
assist all OS vendors with incorporating their improvements,”
Fulton explained.”
“Areas of the research will focus on maximizing the capabilities
of current Internet protocols. “Connections across networks are
managed by Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) software and
research has shown that, in many cases, OSs are configured in ways
that can inhibit optimum TCP performance.”
