All in all, IBM is reinforcing the notion that it’s not
just another brick in Linux’s wall.

“Big Blue and Caldera Systems have announced that OpenLinux
eDesktop 2.4 will be pre-loaded on select models of IBM’s ThinkPad
A series and T series notebooks. For IBM, the move represents
another brick in the path to widespread adoption of its hardware
with a distinctive software alternative. IBM also has worked with
SuSE, Red Hat and TurboLinux to adorn its hardware with Linux power
and flexibility….”

“According to Gartner Group Analyst George Weiss, support from
IBM is an important step toward Linux adoption. “IBM sees an
opportunity–as it did with UNIX in the 1980s–whereby it can be a
leader and a driving force of new applications in the evolving
next-generation Internet ecosystem,” he wrote in a recent CNET
commentary. “IBM does not want to be perceived as sitting on its
hands and letting other firms grab the initiative, as Sun
Microsystems ended up doing with UNIX.”

“Weiss went on to discuss the current enterprise climate for
Linux. “Accordingly, enterprises must be cautious about which
vendors and products they bet on. Failures among Linux companies
could have strong ramifications and may put the onus on IBM and
other system sellers to contribute technically and financially to
the well-being of the Linux community.”
