GnuCash, the open source accounting and finance system, is
gearing up to become the premier accounting package on Linux–and
is rapidly finding the means to do it.

“Rob Browning, one of GnuCash’s developers, explained that the
project has been expanding of late. “Right now we have four
full-time developers, and we’re about to hire a few more,” he said,
attributing the growth of the staff–and the project–to financial
backing from Gnumatic Incorporated, announced August 14, 2000.”

“GnuCash has been quick to take advantage of their new
resources. “We’ve been working on several interesting things that
have just been finished (at least in their first incarnation),”
Browning explained. “Some are high profile, and others provide very
important underpinnings for future work.”

“Browning explained several of GnuCash’s more important
improvements. “The more visible changes include substantial
improvements to the performance of our financial register and a
complete overhaul of our QIF [Quicken® file] format importer.
On the infrastructure side, we’ve rewritten our internal
computations to use a more much more precise numerical
representation, and one which is more appropriate for financial
computations,” he added.”
