“Hello Readers, this week we’ll look at analyst coverage on VA
Linux (NASD: LNUX), the open sourcing of MySQL (private), a hot new
product from ZF Linux Devices (private), and some interesting new
analysis from IDC. Read on for all the details!”

“Here is a breakdown of this week’s events together with some
commentary on what they mean to you.”

Monday, June 26 – ZF Linux Devices announced
that it has produced what it is calling the MachZ ‘PC on a Chip’.
Featuring an ultra-low power consumption rate (1/2 Watt at 133 MHz)
and a comprehensive software suite, including a fully implemented
PhoenixBIOS, and the choice of a customized Linux implementation or
the WindRiver VxWorks real-time OS. Each MachZ Integrated
Development System also comes with Red Hat (NASD: RHAT) Linux 6.2
and LynuxWorks BlueCat Linux as well as the LynuxWorks development
tools for creating compact custom Linux embedded applications. ZF
Linux is targeting OEMs by delivering a more affordable alternative
to porting third party software and searching for unique peripheral
devices. Another interesting feature is the ZF FailSafe system that
includes an autonomous boot on application of power (even if all
external system software has been corrupted or is inaccessible) and
operability even if DRAM or Flash memory is unavailable, making the
MachZ virtually crash-immune. FailSafe also allows upgrades over
the Internet. The features appear to be very rich, and the price
will be very affordable (although specific ZF pricing models were
unavailable). This is a product that seems like it could take Linux
to the next level of competition. We here at LSN can hardly
wait for some of the Linux-based Internet Appliances to come to
market. If they turn out to be priced as expected, and the
functionality is competitive, the Palm and Windows CE based devices
will have to fight tooth and nail for market share.
ZF also
announced on Monday that they have secured $15 million in funding
from a group including National Semiconductor and Samsung.”
