“Texas-based Compaq is the world’s leading PC company and –
behind IBM and Hewlett-Packard – the third largest information
technology company of any stripe. So it’s reasonable to assume the
company may play a significant role in the development of
Linux.”

“Compaq’s extensive product range stretches from tiny handheld
devices up to mighty non-stop enterprise servers as well as
peripheral hardware, but the company is strongest in desktop PCs
and departmental servers – exactly the space of most interest to
the Linux community.”

“There’s little doubt that Compaq makes the right noises about
Linux. As the Compaq and Linux website makes clear, the company has
partnerships with key distributions, contributes to open source
projects and offers a great deal of Linux support. Recently the
company lined up with other industry heavyweights to sing the
praises of and promise to support Gnome.”

“Mind you, let’s not get carried away. Compaq also still has
a very close relationship with Microsoft. Indeed, Compaq is the PC
maker Microsoft most frequently courts. So is the company speaking
with forked tongue when it tries to woo Linux users?
