“Five years ago, open source technology was on the fringe of
heresy, a geek experiment feeding off passion and rebellion. In
real life, it was deployed only by companies at the front line of
technology. Internet service providers (ISP), for instance.
Traditional organisations played it safe, dealing
business-to-business.

“However, in the past 12 months, there’s been a sharp swing of
sentiment in favour of open source. Around the world, governments
have announced strategic policy shifts to accommodate more open
source. Malaysia, Britain and Norway, for example, recently
declared plans to adopt open source where appropriate. The US and
the European Commissions have announced they are examining such a
move.

“In the private sector, more corporations have begun injecting
Linux and other open source technologies into their environments.
In the US, McDonald’s, Shell, Amazon.com, Chevron and Salomon Smith
Barney all recently moved significant parts of their technology
infrastructure across to Linux. Similar moves are afoot in
Australia…”
