Nando Times/AP: Software makers fight exemptions to digital copyright legislation

“Technology industry leaders told a federal panel Friday that
exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act could undermine
their efforts to fight piracy of music, movies and software.”

“…But some computer users disagree, arguing that there are
certain uses for circumventing copyright protection technology that
do not infringe upon a software maker.

“For example, DeCSS is a free software program that allows the
user to decode and copy a DVD movie to a computer hard drive. It
was invented by users of the Linux computer operating system to
play DVD movies on their PCs.”
