NewsFactor: Battle of the Open Source Databases

“2003 promises to be a big year for open source products. Linux
is poised to keep capturing market share in the server and desktop
markets, and Apache undoubtably will remain champion of the Web
server sector. Will this year be good to open source databases as
well?

“Although there are a few open source relational database
management systems available these days, two names always come to
the forefront: MySQL and PostgreSQL. Of these two leading
contenders, is one right for your company? If so, which one?

“The MySQL (pronounced ‘my-ess-que-elle,’ not ‘my-sequel’)
database has grown by leaps and bounds over the last two years in
terms of features. Marten Mickos, CEO of MySQL AB, told NewsFactor
that his company has been very busy. ‘We have constantly added new
features to the product without compromising our two top ambitions:
speed and reliability,’ he said. ‘In the last few years, we have
added or enhanced the SQL functionality, full transaction support,
a JDBC driver, an ODBC driver, replication [and] backup…'”
