Just a few years ago, when Linux was still a dirty
little secret in the back server closet, certification did not
exist. Any employer seeking an admin with Linux experience had to
wade through scads of would-be applicants who thought that
installing Linux on their home PC made them qualified.

“Lack of certification is no longer a problem, although making a
decision may be. Whereas Microsoft, Cisco Systems and other
companies provide definitive certifications for their products,
Linux certification is much like Linux itself: decentralized and
arguably fragmented. Right now, there are several competing Linux
certifications on the market. Two of the most well known are the
Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) and Linux Professional Institute
(LPI) credentials.
