“Whoever said Dell would never be anything more than a peddler
of low-cost PCs has been proven wrong — many times. The latest
evidence: Dell holding its own in the market for Linux servers
against the likes of Hewlett-Packard and IBM, even in such niches
as high-performance computing.

“The fact is, but for HP’s acquisition of Compaq, Dell might
have been sitting atop the market-share charts for worldwide
Linux-server sales and shipments the last 18 months. As it is, Dell
is gaining ground on number one HP.

“How did Dell become one of the top players in the Linux server
market? As it turns out, both its image and its business model are
well-suited to customers who purchase Linux servers, and Dell
offers a bang for the buck that other hardware vendors find hard to
match. Can Dell continue to sell Linux servers at this pace, even
while the open source OS penetrates more complex areas of the
network? Maybe — and maybe not…”
