“Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the largest not-for-profit
healthcare provider in California, needed to consolidate its IT
systems and bring greater efficiency and consistency to the
infrastructure. CHW decided the best way to do that was to move
away from proprietary solutions and toward open source.

“CHW’s primary business is providing acute care, defined as
treatment for a short-term or episodic illness or health problem.
Erik Leader, chief technical architect for CHW, says his company
used to focus solely on a variety of proprietary applications, a
mix which included ‘all the major players in the field. We have
