“Microsoft has been bragging lately about its total cost of
ownership, claiming that its OS is actually cheaper in the long run
than Linux. This is despite the fact that Linux carries no
licensing fees and Microsoft’s products carry very steep licensing
fees.

“Some people buy into this idea on the assumption that Linux can
be more difficult to administer–that is, not all of Linux’s
services come with wizards or GUI checkboxes to administer.
Apparently, if there’s thinking involved, the system must be much
more expensive.

“But Microsoft doesn’t speak about the other costs that come
native to Windows that you won’t find with Linux, aside from
Redmond’s hefty license fees: that is, the extra administrative
cost of a notoriously insecure, buggy and unstable operating
system…”
