Ovum: Will Free Software Offers Pay Off for Sun?

“Sun Microsystems has made the latest in its series of
open-source announcements. A very wide range of its products will
be available free of charge for both development and production
use. The products include the six Java suites that Sun provides,
the N1 management software, development tools such as Java Studio
Enterprise, the SunRay ultra-thin client software, and Sun Secure
Global Desktop Software. In short this represents a large
proportion of Sun’s software assets.

Ovum. We agree that this is a hugely bold move on Sun’s part, and
we agree with Sun’s long-term vision of how the global market is
evolving. But we cannot yet agree on whether this big bet is going
to pay off for Sun…”
