San Mateo County News: VA Software Changes Focus

“Fremont’s VA Software is still working at reinventing itself.
Until November 2001, the company, operating under the name VALinux
Systems, sold the hardware on which the Linux open-source operating
system could run. This was at a time when major computer makers
were not accommodating open source. At that time, it averaged
around $60 million in revenues a year.

“The market turned around when hardware manufacturers started
punching out Linux boxes. Unfortunately, this coincided with the
economic slump. These two developments put the company in an
extremely inauspicious position.

“Ali Jenab, current president and chief executive officer for VA
Software, has been at the helm since the company turned itself from
a hardware manufacturer into a software company that offers a
variety of services and created online sites that support the
open-source community and corporate users of open-source
