Seattle Times: Open Source Rearranging the Landscape

“History may yet judge the real catalyst of the new economy to
be not the Internet, as is widely assumed, but rather the gathering
force of Linux and open-source software.

“It can be argued that open source is changing the competitive
landscape of computing more than the Internet, which largely
consolidated Microsoft’s hegemony once the Redmond company got Web
religion.

“Dire warnings of Microsoft dominance over the Internet have not
come true. But the leading operating system, browser and
productivity software used with the Internet still carry the
Microsoft logo.

“Things are changing, though…”
