news to come out of the conference this week was not Schwartz’s
promise that eventually every Sun software product will be open
source. This is interesting but not too exciting yet, since we have
heard this line before from El Sol. Also, Sun’s definition of ‘open
source’ is a bit different from that of the Linux crowd and us here
at Roundup, so any move to open Sun’s tech is going to be looked on
with a very cynical eye by the same group of developers Sun
desperately wants to recruit to help with its current
community-driven efforts (i.e., OpenSolaris) and anything it might
open in the future…”
