“There are two things we’ve noticed about the quarterly server
shipment stats from Gartner and IDC: Their releases seems to always
coincide with a holiday weekend, and no matter what the actual
numbers say, every major vendor finds a way to spin them to make
itself No. 1 in at least one area.

“Second quarter 2005 was no exception. Although it wasn’t quite
the holiday weekend, we’ll let that slide. While there was little
to dispute about the clear-cut winner — both IDC and Gartner
named IBM, which captured roughly one-third of the market —
movement in the Unix space was hotly contested and filled with
contradictions…”
